"That was our challenge. We wanted to build a place where we could enjoy the connection we need to Nature, share it for others to enjoy as well, and still do so in a harmonious and organic way. I think we did that."

It's About Living In Harmony With Nature

Our Story

After leaving their busy lives managing a beach club restaurant in the Mexican Caribbean cruise port of Costa Maya, Steve and Maggie Uhl chose to return to Steve's home state of Texas for a more relaxed lifestyle. So they purchased a small piece of woodland and began to create their new bed and breakfast residence.

Steve’s background in home building and land development allowed him to design and build a place that is both a home, and a built-in boutique B&B hotel. His “home/business under one roof” plan enabled him to build guest rooms that felt more like hotel rooms, and less like they were in someone’s home, which was a top design priority. His finished plan gave them the quiet house in the country on one side, with the guest-only gardens and private patio entries for the B&B on the opposite side of the home. Gardens and forests galore, just what they wanted!

And Maggie grew up the daughter of a famous Mexican jazz man, which meant she sang a lot growing up in a house full of musicians. It also meant she learned traditional Mexican cooking in her mother’s kitchen, the way her mother had taught her before, and where she discovered a reverence for her country’s wonderful culinary traditions. After decades of working in Mexican hospitality kitchens all over Mexico, she and Steve opened the Tropicante Ameri Mex Grill in Mahahual, where she took on the role of kitchen manager. No more cooking, she now hired cooks, developed recipes, sourced the ingredients (no small task in remote Mexico) and created a menu. And the result was a 5 star Trip Advisor restaurant. So, the boutique kitchen part of the B&B allows her once again cook, sing of course, and make Mom's traditional dishes, while still making them " a little bit her own" in the B&B kitchen.
